Episcopal Diocese of Haiti

In 1864, sixty years after Haiti won its independence from France, Father James Theodore Holly, an Episcopal priest from Connecticut, came to Haiti along with 100 of his parishioners. Father Holly became the first Bishop of Haiti in 1874. Today the Diocese of Haiti has some 80,000 members in 111 congregations, missions and preaching stations. Forty-eight priests serve the diocese. The diocese emphasizes education in its outreach. The current Bishop is the Rt. Rev. Jean Zache Duracin.

The Bishop Tharp Institute, Les Cayes

The Bishop Tharp Business and Technology Institute (BTI) first opened in September 2005. Based on a community college model, BTI provides university-level courses such as business management, computer technology, statistics and English in Haiti’s third largest city.

St. Barnabas Agricultural School, Terrier Rouge
The goal and mission of this agricultural school is to teach young farmers how to effectively farm a small piece of land, growing a high volume of quality vegetables. The practical skills learned in the 2-year program make a difference in the lives of students and their communities.

Vocational Training

Two general vocational training centers are located in Cap-Haitien and Port-au-Prince.

College St. Pierre, Port-au-Prince
College St. Pierre, a secondary school opened in 1957. This school and the diocese share an important role in preserving and propagating the artistic heritage of Haiti. A museum, constructed across the street from the school, houses a permanent collection of Haitian art.

Holy Trinity Elementary School, Port-au-Prince
Founded in 1913 and operated by the Sisters of the Society of St. Margaret from 1927 until 1995. The school has 887 students with about 50 teachers, 6 supervisors and 10 support staff.

Holy Trinity Music School, Port-au-Prince
In association with Holy Trinity School, the music school staff provide basic instruction in general music including music initiation, voice, winds, brass, strings and piano. Also provided are beginner, intermediate and advance orchestras and ensembles and the Les Petits Chanteurs for boys and young men.

The Musée d'Art Haïtien du College St Pierre, Port-au-Prince

The National Art Museum, part of College St. Pierre - houses an extensive collection of Haitian art.

The Holy Trinity Philharmonic Orchestra, Port-au-Prince - This ensemble serves as Haiti’s unofficial state orchestra.

The hospital is a primary source of care for infectious diseases. Working with Partners in Health, provides health worker teams, outpatient clinics and expanded care to Haiti’s central plateau.

A birthing center that provides full prenatal, maternal and postnatal care in a compassionate and dignified atmosphere.

St. Vincent’s Center for Handicapped Children, Port-au-Prince
St. Vincent's Centre for Handicapped Children is a school and medical facility that enrolls about 450 students, 170 of whom are boarders. The center is the major facility in Haiti that services children with disabilities and houses a medical clinic, a physical therapy department, an eye clinic and a brace shop.

Haitian Development Initiative
In partnership with Episcopal Relief and Development, assists local communities in identifying needs and implementing small development projects, such as bread-baking, fish farms and goat farming to provide income opportunities for families.

Partnership Program
The Episcopal Diocese of Haiti established a Partnership Program, fostering connections between churches and schools in the United States and Canada with Episcopal churches in Haiti. Partners have paid teachers’ salaries, provided classroom equipment, books, helped to build school buildings, provided medical help and exchanged visits, letters and prayers.

Society of St. Margaret

The Society of St. Margaret is an Episcopal Religious order of women that has been active in Haiti since the 1940’s. Sister Joan Margaret founded St. Vincent’s Center for Handicapped Children in 1945 and Sister Anne Marie managed Holy Trinity School from 1958 until 1995. Currently the convent in Port-au-Prince supports Foyer Notre Dame, a home for indigent elderly people and direct a scholarship program for needy children and young people.
