Transition and funding issues at Hopital Ste Croix have adversely affected its ability to operate in recent months. In-patient services were suspended; however an outpatient clinic continued as did the services of the Children’s Nutrition Program.

A newly formed board hopes to find the funding needed and begin again providing the full services of this critical regional hospital.

Hopes for the future:

When fully functional, Hopital Ste. Croix, Leogone, is a 100-bed general hospital that serves as the only medical center for a region of the country that encompasses some 250,000 people.

It provides 24-hour emergency room, four operating rooms in the recently expanded surgical suit, a pharmacy, x-ray facilities, laboratory testing, pre-natal care, health information, and eye care including eye surgery.

Through village outpost clinics, the hospital provides preventative health care, including immunizations, nutritional and AIDS prevention information.

The hospital also trains and supplies several hundred midwives and community health workers to extend its care to the more remote regions of the country. It uses its own radio station to broadcast health information as a way to overcome the barriers of distance, lack of transportation and poor or non-existent roads.

The hospital also collaborates with the World Health Organization in research on how to control and eventually eradicate the mosquito-borne disease of filariasis.
